AJ Painting was honored to restore the historic exterior of Sean’s Bar, the world’s oldest pub and one of Ireland’s most iconic and photographed tourist attractions. This project was a unique opportunity to blend historic preservation with durable, high-quality finishes. Our goal was to refresh Sean’s Bar’s exterior while ensuring that it would stand the test of time and the elements, preserving its heritage and charm for countless visitors.
We began by carefully stripping back and repairing the old paint layers, a process essential to achieving a smooth and lasting finish. With prep as the foundation of our work, we used Owatrol Oil on the wooden pillars to draw out any excess moisture from the timber. This step helps to stabilize the surface, providing a solid base for the layers to come. Using Toupret Murex filler, along with a damp sponge for an even finish, we meticulously filled, primed, and prepared every surface, ensuring that each coat would adhere flawlessly. After all surfaces were scraped, primed, and filled, we applied a final layer of primer to ensure the best possible finish before moving to the top coats.
In consultation with Pat McDonnell Paints, we selected the finest oil-based products available for their durability and aesthetic appeal. Our choice of Dulux Gloss, Tikkurila Temaprime, Tikkurila Temalac 90, and Owatrol Oil provided the deep, lasting finish we envisioned. Working with both Pat McDonnell Paints and Carlow Paint Hub proved invaluable as their expertise and product knowledge helped bring out the best in our materials. Their support on this project exemplifies the kind of collaborative spirit that elevates craftsmanship and promotes painting and decorating in Ireland.
Sean’s Bar now stands with a refreshed look that honors its legacy while enhancing its durability.
